Canada Visa for UAE Residents: eTA or Visitor Visa?

Whether you need a Canada eTA or a full visitor visa depends on your passport nationality, not on the fact that you live in the UAE. If your passport is from a visa-exempt country (this includes UAE nationals since 2018) and you're flying, an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) usually takes minutes to get online. If your passport is from most other countries, including India, Pakistan, the Philippines, Nigeria and many others, you'll need a full Temporary Resident Visa (TRV), applied for through a visa application centre in the UAE.

Last checked: 22 September 2026. Visa and eTA rules, fees and processing times are set by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) and do change — always confirm your exact requirement on the official canada.ca eTA/visa check tool before you book flights or accommodation.

Do UAE residents need a visa for Canada?

Living in the UAE does not change what document you need for Canada — your passport does. IRCC is explicit that citizenship determines the requirement, not country of residence. A British, French, South Korean or Emirati passport holder based in Dubai is treated the same as one living anywhere else.

UAE nationals specifically became eligible for the eTA (instead of needing a visa) from 5 June 2018, when Canada added the UAE to its list of visa-exempt countries for short visits, as announced in this official IRCC news release. If you hold a UAE passport and are flying to Canada, you now apply for an eTA, not a visa.

If you hold a passport from a country that is not on Canada's visa-exempt list, you still need a TRV even though you're a long-term UAE resident with an Emirates ID. There's no "UAE resident" shortcut in Canadian immigration rules — only the passport counts. Use our visa finder to check what your specific nationality requires before you plan the trip.

eTA vs visitor visa: which do you need?

The quickest way to know for certain is the official canada.ca check tool, which asks for your passport country, how you're travelling, and your purpose of visit. As a general rule:

How to apply for a Canada eTA

If your passport qualifies, the eTA is applied for entirely online, directly with IRCC:

  1. Have your passport, a valid email address and a credit or debit card ready (Visa, Mastercard, Amex, UnionPay and JCB are accepted).
  2. Complete the official eTA application form in one sitting — it cannot be saved and resumed.
  3. Pay the CAD $7 fee.
  4. Most applicants get an approval email within minutes; IRCC says some are asked for extra documents and get a reply within 72 hours instead.

Apply only through the government's own site — some third-party sites charge extra for the same form. If you'd rather have it checked first, get in touch and we'll confirm which route applies to your passport.

How to apply for a Canada visitor visa (TRV)

If your nationality needs a full visitor visa, the application itself is also submitted online through the IRCC secure account portal, but the process has an extra in-person step:

  1. Create an IRCC online account and complete the visitor visa (TRV) application, uploading scanned copies of your documents.
  2. Pay the application fee (CAD $100 per person) plus the biometrics fee (CAD $85) if this is your first Canadian application in the last 10 years.
  3. Book an appointment to give your fingerprints and photo at a VFS Global Canada Visa Application Centre in Dubai or Abu Dhabi — these are the official biometrics and document-support points for Canada visa applicants based in the UAE.
  4. Wait for a decision. IRCC processes the application once biometrics are received; you can track status through your online account.

Because biometrics need an in-person visit, apply well ahead of your travel dates. Planning a stopover too? Browse our destinations pages to check requirements for other countries on the same trip.

Documents you'll need

Exact document lists vary by visa office and individual case, so always check the checklist generated for your application on IRCC's own portal rather than relying on a generic list.

Processing times

eTA decisions are typically fast — IRCC states most are approved "within minutes," with only a small share needing extra review time. Visitor visa processing is far less predictable: it depends on your nationality, the visa office handling your file, and current application volumes, and can range from a couple of weeks to considerably longer. IRCC publishes current estimates on its processing times tool — check this close to when you plan to apply, since it updates regularly, and build in a buffer before non-refundable flights or hotel bookings.

Frequently asked questions

Can I apply for a Canada eTA as a UAE resident even if I'm not a UAE national?

Yes — the eTA is tied to your passport, not your residence. If your passport is from a visa-exempt country you can apply for the eTA from the UAE (or anywhere) online, regardless of your Emirates residence status.

Do I need a visa for Canada if I only have a UAE residence visa and no other proof of nationality?

Canada doesn't accept UAE residency as a substitute for a home-country passport requirement. You apply based on the nationality shown in your travel document, so check your passport-issuing country's status on the official tool.

Is the eTA the same as a visa?

No. An eTA is a lighter-touch electronic authorization linked to your passport for air travel, while a visitor visa (TRV) is a full application with biometrics, reviewed individually by a visa officer, and is generally required for nationalities that aren't visa-exempt.

Where do I give biometrics for a Canada visa in the UAE?

At an official VFS Global Canada Visa Application Centre in Dubai or Abu Dhabi, once your online application and fees are submitted and you've booked an appointment.

What if I hold more than one passport?

Apply using the passport you intend to travel on. If you later change passports, an eTA linked to the old one is no longer valid at check-in, and a new application or update is needed.
