Turkey Visa for UAE Residents: Do You Need One?

Most people living in the UAE do need some form of permission to enter Turkey, but very few of them need to queue at a consulate for it. What you actually need — nothing at all, a quick online e-Visa, or a full visa application — depends on your passport nationality, not on your UAE residence visa or Emirates ID.

Last checked: 22 September 2026. Visa rules change without much notice, so always confirm current requirements on the official Turkey e-Visa portal or with the Turkish Consulate General in Dubai before you book or travel.

Do UAE residents need a visa for Turkey?

It depends entirely on the passport you hold, not on where you live or work. Turkey's Ministry of Foreign Affairs sets entry rules by nationality, and that policy applies the same way whether you're applying from the UAE, from your home country, or anywhere else. Living in the UAE doesn't get you a special exemption — but it does make the process more convenient, since eligible nationalities can apply for an e-Visa online in minutes, and anyone who does need an in-person visa can apply through the Turkish Consulate General in Dubai and its appointed visa centre, VFS Global.

One important update: since a decree that took effect in December 2023, UAE (Emirati) passport holders can now enter Turkey visa-free for tourism or business stays of up to 90 days within any 180-day period — the same exemption Turkey extended to citizens of the US, Canada, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain and Oman. This is separate from, and does not extend to, the millions of other nationalities who live and work in the UAE, whose Turkey visa requirement still depends on their own passport.

Turkey visa vs e-Visa: which do you need?

Broadly, passports fall into four groups. Always verify your specific nationality on the official portal, since the list is set and updated by the Turkish government.

How to apply for a Turkey e-Visa

If your passport is e-Visa eligible, the official e-Visa website describes the process in three broad steps:

  1. Go directly to evisa.gov.tr — apply only through this official domain. Several copycat sites with similar names charge inflated "service fees" for the same application, so double-check the URL before you enter any payment details.
  2. Enter your passport and travel details, and confirm your eligibility for the country and travel document you hold.
  3. Pay online by Visa or Mastercard, then download the e-Visa document that's emailed to you. Keep a digital or printed copy — passport control checks it electronically, but it's worth having a backup.

Keep in mind the e-Visa is only valid for tourism or commercial visits. If you're travelling to Turkey for work, study or any other purpose, you'll need to apply for the relevant visa through the Turkish Consulate General in Dubai instead.

Turkey e-Visa fees

The e-Visa fee is not a flat, single amount — it's set by the Turkish government and varies by nationality and, in some cases, visa validity. The official portal states that e-Visas obtained through evisa.gov.tr work out cheaper than getting a visa on arrival, and payment is taken securely by Visa or Mastercard as the final step of the online application, where the exact fee for your passport is shown before you pay. Because the amount can change, we're not going to guess a number here — check the fee that applies to your nationality directly on the official portal before applying.

How long is the e-Visa valid?

Validity, number of entries (single or multiple) and permitted length of stay are all set per nationality, based on reciprocal arrangements between Turkey and your passport country. Many eligible nationalities are granted e-Visas valid for a 90-day period, but this isn't universal — your exact validity, entry count and maximum stay are displayed on the e-Visa document itself before you confirm payment, so read it carefully rather than assuming it matches what a friend or colleague received.

Frequently asked questions

My UAE residence visa is valid — does that help me get a Turkey visa?

No. Your UAE residence visa or Emirates ID has no bearing on Turkey's entry requirements. Turkey looks at your passport's nationality only, so check the category for your specific passport rather than assuming UAE residency simplifies anything.

Can Emirati passport holders enter Turkey without a visa?

Yes. Since a December 2023 exemption, UAE nationals can enter Turkey visa-free for tourism or business for up to 90 days within any 180-day period. This exemption applies to the Emirati passport specifically, not to UAE residents of other nationalities.

Where do UAE residents apply if their nationality isn't e-Visa eligible?

Through the Turkish Consulate General in Dubai's appointed visa application partner, VFS Global, which handles sticker visa applications and appointments for UAE-based applicants.

Is there still a visa-on-arrival option for Turkey?

Turkey has largely moved away from visa-on-arrival stickers in favour of the online e-Visa system. If your nationality is e-Visa eligible, you should apply online before you travel rather than expecting to get a visa at the airport.

Does the e-Visa cover business trips, not just tourism?

Yes — Turkey's e-Visa is valid for both tourism and commercial (business) visits. It does not cover work, study or long-term stays, which require a different visa applied for through the consulate.
