For most UAE residents applying for a Japan tourism e-visa, you need your passport, a recent photo, proof of your UAE residence status, flight and hotel bookings, an original employer letter, and three months of bank statements. Missing or incorrectly formatted documents are the most common reason applications are rejected or delayed.
Who This Checklist Applies To
This covers the single-entry tourism e-visa, which is the route most UAE-based travellers use for a holiday in Japan. It applies if you hold a valid UAE residence visa and live in Dubai, Sharjah, Ajman, Umm Al Quwain, Ras Al Khaimah or Fujairah (Afghan, Syrian and Yemeni residents are also covered under this route). If your trip is for business, visiting relatives, or a longer stay, a different visa category and document list applies - see our guide to the Japan visa for UAE residents for an overview of the routes available.
The Full Document Checklist
According to the official VFS Global checklist, a complete tourism e-visa application needs:
- Visa application form - typed in block letters, every field completed (write N/A where something doesn't apply), originally signed.
- One photo - 45mm x 35mm, color, plain white background, taken within the last 6 months, glued (not stapled) to the form.
- Original passport plus a colour copy - with more than 2 blank visa pages, valid for at least 30 days after your planned return from Japan.
- UAE residence visa copy and Emirates ID copy - both valid for at least 30 days after your return; you must bring the original Emirates ID to the visa centre.
- Flight booking - a confirmed or provisional e-ticket, or a travel agency voucher.
- Hotel booking - showing your name, the hotel's name, address and contact details for your full stay (Airbnb-style rentals are not accepted for Chinese nationals specifically).
- Day-by-day itinerary - your schedule of stay in Japan including accommodation details.
- Original employment letter - addressed to the Consul-General of Japan in Dubai, on company letterhead with a company seal and wet signature, stating your salary, position and the purpose of travel, with a financial undertaking. Business owners and Golden Visa holders need an equivalent company letter (plus a Free Zone NOC if applicable).
- Proof of finances - three months of UAE bank e-statements, or an account detail certificate, dated within 10 days of your application.
Applying as a family, or for a minor, group or school trip adds extra documents such as sponsor NOCs and proof of kinship - the VFS checklist linked above sets these out in full.
Timing: When to Apply
You can apply up to 90 days before your travel date, but not within two weeks of your flight. Group applications of 10 or more travellers need to contact VFS customer support at least 2 weeks ahead of the appointment with the full group's details.
The Photo Rules Most Applicants Get Wrong
The photo must be 45mm x 35mm (not the 35mm x 45mm or passport-size formats used for other countries), taken within the last six months against a plain white background, and printed on non-textured paper. An outdated or wrongly-sized photo is a common, easily-avoidable rejection reason.
What Happens if a Document Is Missing or Incorrect?
The official checklist warns that incomplete or incorrect documentation can lead to immediate rejection of your application, or termination of the process partway through. Only your passport is returned if your application is refused - supporting documents are generally not. This is why it's worth having your file checked before submission rather than at the counter.
Validity and Entry Rules Once You're Approved
The tourism e-visa is electronic - there is no sticker in your passport. You'll need to show the "visa issuance notice" on a smartphone or tablet at check-in and at Japanese immigration, so make sure you have a working device and data access when you travel. It is valid for three months from the date of issue and for a single entry only, and your stay cannot exceed 90 days with no paid or remunerated activity allowed.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need an invitation letter for a Japan tourist e-visa from the UAE?
No - an invitation letter applies to certain other categories (such as visiting friends or relatives), not the standard tourism e-visa. For tourism, your employer letter, bookings and bank statements take the place of an invitation.
Can I use my own savings if my employer won't issue a letter?
The official checklist specifically requires an employer or company letter for salaried applicants, business owners, and Golden Visa holders, so this is not optional for most applicants - it supports both your financial standing and your reason to return to the UAE.
How many blank pages does my passport need for a Japan e-visa?
More than two blank visa pages, and your passport must stay valid for at least 30 days after your return date from Japan. If your UAE residence visa is in an older, replaced passport, bring both passports.
Can I book a vacation rental instead of a hotel?
The checklist calls out that Airbnb-style vacation rentals specifically cannot be used by Chinese nationals applying through this route; other applicants should still provide a hotel-style booking with full contact details to avoid any ambiguity in your itinerary.
How far in advance should I apply?
Apply no earlier than 90 days before travel and no later than 2 weeks before your flight, to leave time for processing and to avoid your bank statements or employer letter becoming outdated.
