Japan visa fees for UAE residents depend on your nationality and the visa category, running from free for nationals of "gratis" countries to roughly AED 160 for a multiple-entry tourist visa, plus a separate VFS Global service fee. Standard processing takes a minimum of 8–10 working days, longer if your documents are incomplete.
Japan visa fees for UAE residents
According to the official Japan Visa Application Centre fee table for the UAE, consular fees are charged in AED and vary by nationality and category:
| Visa category | Other nationalities | Indian nationals | Gratis countries |
|---|---|---|---|
| Single entry (tourism, business/conference, market research, visiting family) | AED 80 | AED 20 | AED 0 |
| Business affairs – single entry | AED 75 | AED 20 | AED 0 |
| E-visa – single entry | AED 75 | AED 20 | AED 0 |
| Multiple entry (business, tourism, visiting family/friends) | AED 160 | AED 20 | AED 0 |
| Long stay visa | AED 75 | AED 20 | AED 0 |
On top of the consular fee, the VFS Global service fee runs roughly AED 100–110 (including 5% VAT), paid separately at the visa application centre when you submit. The centre notes that both the consular fee and service fee can change with exchange rates without prior notice, so treat the table above as a guide and confirm the exact figure at the time you book.
Why do fees differ by nationality?
The lower fee for Indian nationals and the zero fee for "gratis" countries reflect bilateral fee arrangements Japan has with specific countries, not anything about where you live. As a UAE resident, the fee you pay is set by your passport's nationality, the same as it would be if you applied from your home country — UAE residence affects where you apply, not what you're charged.
Processing time
Per the Japan Visa Application Centre, standard processing is a minimum of 8–10 working days from submission, not counting weekends or holidays announced by the Embassy of Japan in the UAE. If your documents are incomplete, or for other justified reasons, processing can extend to 3–4 weeks. You can only submit your application up to 90 days before entering Japan — applications submitted earlier aren't accepted, so don't rush to apply too far ahead.
How to apply from the UAE: step by step
- Confirm your visa category based on your purpose of travel and nationality, and check which Japan Visa Application Centre has jurisdiction over your emirate.
- Prepare your documents against the checklist for your category, including the application form, letter of guarantee, itinerary and, for business trips, a company overview.
- Get a compliant photo: 45mm x 35mm, color, plain background, taken within the last 6 months, face clearly visible and looking straight ahead.
- Book your appointment through the VFS Global portal.
- Submit in person (or through an authorised representative) at the visa application centre and pay both the consular fee and the VFS service fee in AED.
- For a long-stay visa, first obtain a Certificate of Eligibility from a person or organisation in Japan, then submit the original with your application.
Groups of 10 or more — school trips or corporate training, for example — should contact VFS customer support at least two weeks before the appointment with the group representative's details and each applicant's passport and UAE visa information.
Keep in mind that the consular fee and the VFS service fee are paid separately, in person, at submission — you generally can't pre-pay online before your appointment. Budgeting for both amounts together, rather than just the headline consular fee, avoids a surprise at the counter on the day.

Frequently asked questions
How much does a Japan tourist visa cost from the UAE?
Most nationalities pay around AED 80 for a single-entry tourist visa or AED 160 for multiple entry, plus the separate VFS service fee of roughly AED 100–110. Indian nationals pay a reduced AED 20 consular fee. Always confirm the exact current amount when you book, since rates can shift.
How long does it take to get a Japan visa from the UAE?
At least 8–10 working days under normal circumstances, and up to 3–4 weeks if your documents are incomplete or further checks are needed.
Can I apply earlier than 90 days before my trip?
No. Applications submitted more than 90 days before your intended entry into Japan are not accepted.
Is the e-visa cheaper or faster than a sticker visa?
The e-visa consular fee is similar to a standard single-entry visa, and it's issued electronically with no sticker in your passport — you show the visa issuance notice on your phone or tablet at Japanese immigration. It's valid for three months from issuance and allows one entry, so it doesn't change the processing time, just the format.
What if I'm applying as part of a group?
Groups of 10 or more should contact VFS customer support at least two weeks ahead with the representative's details, each applicant's passport and UAE visa details, and the travel dates and purpose.
